The daily soil moisture data are instantaneous (i.e., measured at a particular instant) values of three-hourly averaged root zone (0 through 1-meter depth) soil moisture estimated at 3:00 p.m. approximately three days ago from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Soil Moisture Active Passive Mission (SMAP) Level 4 product.

Soil moisture values are expressed as cubic meters of water per bulk cubic meter of soil (m3/m3). The product merges SMAP soil moisture observations in the top 5 cm of the soil column with estimates from a land surface model in a data assimilation system. Through interpolation and extrapolation of SMAP observations in both time and space, the model produces 3-hourly estimates of soil moisture at a 9 km resolution.
